Bathinda Couple Trapped in Dubai as Iran-Israel Conflict Escalates

In a harrowing ordeal, a couple from Bathinda, Punjab, finds themselves stranded in Dubai amidst a dangerous escalation of conflict between Iran and Israel. Neeru Garg, the principal of a private college in Bathinda, and her husband embarked on a trip to the United Arab Emirates from February 22 to 28, only to have their return flight abruptly cancelled due to the regional turmoil.

Flight Cancellation Leaves Them Homeless and Vulnerable

The couple was scheduled to board an Indigo flight from Sharjah to Amritsar at 2:30 PM on Saturday. However, around 2 PM, they received news that flights were delayed and likely to be cancelled. "We got worried," Garg recounted in a social media chat. After waiting in hope, they were informed of the flight's cancellation but were left without assistance. "Around 10 PM, we were told to move out without being provided any help," she said.

Indigo authorities directed them to contact airline officials at the baggage collection point, but upon arrival, the office was deserted. With no place to go, they sat outside the airport for nearly 30 minutes. All nearby hotels were fully booked, forcing them to secure an expensive room 20 kilometers away, only to be evicted at 11 AM on Sunday.

Seeking Shelter in a City Under Attack

On Sunday morning, the couple hired a taxi from Sharjah to Dubai, unwittingly landing in a city targeted by Iranian missiles. "We have taken shelter at the house of an Indian doctor, arranged for by a family friend from Bathinda," Garg explained from Dubai. Their situation is dire: they are running low on essential medicines, including for blood pressure, and have exhausted their funds.

"We have no idea where to go as we don't have any money left," she lamented. Despite offers of help from loved ones, they feel abandoned, with no guidance from authorities. The couple has urgently requested the Indian government to evacuate them and other stranded Indians in the Middle East.

Broader Impact of the Conflict

This personal crisis unfolds against a backdrop of heightened tensions. Recent reports indicate:

  • Missile and drone attacks on Dubai and other Gulf cities like Doha and Manama.
  • Casualties in Israel from Iranian strikes, with eight fatalities reported.
  • The UAE urging Iran to "go back to your senses" after attacks on its airports.

The conflict has disrupted travel for thousands, leaving many, like the Gargs, in precarious situations. As the hours tick by, their plea for evacuation grows more desperate, highlighting the human cost of geopolitical strife.
