Students of Dr Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) in Lucknow staged an overnight protest outside the Vice-Chancellor's residence on campus, alleging that poor-quality food served in the girls' hostel led to the death of a BSc student on Wednesday. The deceased was a second-semester Integrated BSc-MSc student residing in the Yashodhara Girls' Hostel.
Details of the Incident
The student initially received treatment at the university health centre, but her condition did not improve. Her family subsequently took her home, where she was admitted to a hospital and later died. Student Palak Maurya stated, 'She was diagnosed with food poisoning and died, and we demand action against hostel and university officials.'
University's Response
The university administration provided a different account, stating that the student complained of fever on April 20 around 3 pm and was taken to the health centre, where she was examined, prescribed medicines, and advised follow-up care if needed. Officials said she informed her local guardian and applied for leave from April 20 to April 30 before leaving campus for her home in Varanasi. BBAU spokesperson Rachna Gangwar asserted, 'Not a single complaint about food quality has been received since April 20.'
Investigation and Condolences
The university expressed condolences to the bereaved family and announced that a committee has been formed to investigate the student's death and the events surrounding the April 28 protest. The protest, which lasted overnight, saw students demanding accountability and improved food quality in hostels. The university has urged calm and assured a thorough inquiry into the matter.
