Belagavi District Launches Unprecedented Legal Awareness Campaign in Schools

The Belagavi District Legal Services Authority has announced an ambitious district-level legal awareness program scheduled for this Saturday. The initiative will reach an impressive 1,200 government and private high schools across the district, marking one of the largest educational outreach efforts of its kind in the region.

Massive Outreach with Judicial Participation

During a press conference held on Wednesday, Principal District and Sessions Judge Manjunath Nayak revealed comprehensive details about the program. The main inaugural function will be conducted at KLS High School in Tilakwadi and will be inaugurated via video conference by District Administrative Judge Jayant Banerjee, ensuring wide accessibility from the outset.

What makes this initiative particularly significant is the direct involvement of 65 judges from across Belagavi district, who will personally visit different schools to conduct awareness sessions. These judicial officers will be joined by advocates, mediators, para-legal volunteers, and other legal experts, creating a comprehensive educational team dedicated to legal literacy.

Focus on Critical Child Protection Legislation

The awareness sessions will concentrate on several crucial pieces of legislation affecting young people. Primary emphasis will be placed on:

  • The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO)
  • Laws relating to child marriage prevention
  • Regulations concerning child labor

Judge Nayak emphasized that the district aims to establish a new benchmark through this large-scale outreach, potentially creating a model that other districts might follow for enhancing legal awareness among students.

Upcoming National Lok Adalat on March 14

In related judicial news, Judge Nayak announced that the first National Lok Adalat of the year will be conducted on March 14 across all taluk courts in Belagavi district. Approximately 85 Lok Adalat benches will function on that day, with nearly 28,000 cases already identified for potential settlement through this alternative dispute resolution mechanism.

The previous Lok Adalat held in December achieved remarkable results, disposing of more than 20,000 pending court cases along with over three lakh pre-litigation cases. Judicial authorities express optimism about achieving similar success rates during the upcoming March session, which would significantly reduce the backlog of cases in the district's judicial system.

Intensified Mediation Drive Following Supreme Court Guidelines

Simultaneously, the district judiciary has intensified its mediation efforts in strict accordance with guidelines issued by the Supreme Court of India. This mediation process, which commenced in January, will continue for a full 90-day period as part of a structured approach to conflict resolution.

Trained advocates have been formally appointed as mediators in various courts to facilitate amicable settlements, with particular focus on family and matrimonial disputes. Judge Nayak noted that mediation has proven especially effective in resolving conflicts between spouses, helping to reduce the burden on traditional court systems while promoting more harmonious settlements that preserve relationships.

The combination of these initiatives—the school awareness program, the upcoming Lok Adalat, and the intensified mediation drive—represents a comprehensive approach to improving legal access, awareness, and dispute resolution throughout Belagavi district.
