Belagavi Police Crack Down on Inter-State Two-Wheeler Theft Syndicate
In a significant breakthrough for law enforcement, the Sankeshwar police in Belagavi district have successfully dismantled a sophisticated inter-state two-wheeler theft racket. The operation has led to the arrest of two key accused and the recovery of 27 stolen vehicles, with a combined estimated value of Rs 18.3 lakh. This crackdown has effectively solved numerous theft cases reported not only across Belagavi district but also in neighboring regions of Maharashtra.
Arrests Made and Accused Identified
The police have taken into custody two individuals believed to be central figures in the theft network. The arrested accused are Laxman Virupakshi Kanbargi, aged 31, originally from Ankalgi in Gokak taluk and currently residing in Samarth Nagar, Belagavi, and Fakirappa Siddappa Karigar, aged 25, a resident of Hirehalli in Gokak taluk, who was presently staying in Bolkadabi within Yargatti taluk. Their apprehension marks a critical step in disrupting the criminal activities that have plagued the area.
Investigation Triggered by Specific Complaint
The investigation gained momentum following a formal complaint filed by Ajit Subhash Arbole, a 41-year-old resident of Jugul village in Kagwad taluk. Arbole reported the theft of his two-wheeler in Sankeshwar on March 31, which prompted immediate police action. In response, authorities established a special investigation team to delve into the matter thoroughly.
This dedicated team operated under the strategic guidance of SP K Ramarajan, ASP RB Basargi, and DSP Ravi Naik. Leading the on-ground efforts was inspector SM Avaji, who was ably assisted by sub-inspector US Shettenavar and supporting staff. Their intensified probe quickly yielded results, leading to the detention of the suspects.
Confessions and Formal Arrests
During the course of the investigation, the suspects were detained and subjected to sustained interrogation. Under questioning, they confessed to their active involvement in a series of vehicle thefts, providing crucial information that aided the recovery efforts. Based on their admissions and the evidence gathered, the police formally arrested both individuals on April 2, solidifying the case against them.
Scope of Recovered Vehicles and Ongoing Probe
According to SP Ramarajan, the 27 recovered two-wheelers were stolen from various locations across Belagavi district. The thefts occurred in multiple areas, including:
- Sankeshwar
- Bailhongal
- Hirebagewadi
- APMC
- Shahapur

This widespread pattern highlights the extensive reach of the theft racket within the region. Efforts are focused on identifying any potential accomplices and uncovering additional details about the operation's scope and methodology.
The successful bust not only represents a major victory for local law enforcement but also serves as a deterrent to similar criminal activities in the area. Residents have expressed relief at the police's proactive measures, hoping for continued vigilance against such thefts in the future.
