Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday announced that India's single emergency number, 112, will soon be integrated with police stations across the state. This integration is expected to enable faster deployment of police vehicles during emergencies.
MoU Signed with Rashtriya Raksha University
Speaking at Nabanna during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) and Bengal Police, the Chief Minister explained that the system would operate similarly to the Quick Response Team (QRT) vans used during elections. He noted that several other states have already integrated their police forces with the emergency system.
The MoU was signed by RRU Pro-Vice Chancellor Kalpesh H Wandra and Director General of Police SN Gupta.
Restoring Police Force Excellence
The Chief Minister remarked that the Bengal Police previously enjoyed a strong reputation for competence. Similarly, the Kolkata Police was once compared to several international police forces. However, over time, the previous government failed to properly utilize that strength and capability.
"That is why we felt it was necessary to increase police manpower, provide modern equipment, and strengthen infrastructure. We are signing this agreement so that West Bengal Police does not have to remain dependent on central forces, and so that we can restore our police force to its former level of excellence and stature," Adhikari said.
Reducing Dependence on Central Forces
The agreement with RRU is aimed at reducing the state's dependence on central forces and assisting in restoring the state's police force to its former standards.
