Suspension Extended in High-Profile Case
The West Bengal government has extended the suspension of three IPS officers involved in the RG Kar rape-murder case by four months. The decision came after Suvendu Adhikari assumed charge as the state's Chief Minister, according to an official order issued on July 6, 2026.
The three officers, whose identities have not been disclosed, were initially suspended in connection with the investigation into the rape and murder of a woman at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The case sparked widespread outrage and protests across the state.
Government Cites Ongoing Investigation
The suspension extension order, signed by the state Home Secretary, states that the officers remain under suspension due to the ongoing nature of the investigation. It emphasizes the need to ensure a fair and unhindered probe into the incident.
According to sources, the three IPS officers were accused of negligence and dereliction of duty during the initial response to the crime. Their suspension was first ordered by the previous government under Mamata Banerjee, but the new administration under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has continued the measure.
Political Reactions and Demands for Action
Opposition parties have criticized the government, demanding a thorough investigation and strict action against all guilty parties. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for a central agency probe into the matter, alleging a cover-up by the state government.
"The extension of suspension is a step in the right direction, but we need a transparent investigation to ensure justice for the victim," said a senior BJP leader. The victim's family has also demanded a fast-track court trial and exemplary punishment for the accused.
As of now, the three IPS officers remain suspended pending further orders. The case continues to be monitored by the Calcutta High Court, which has directed the state government to submit periodic progress reports on the investigation.
