A 35-year-old cab driver in Bengaluru died by suicide after allegedly facing relentless harassment from a private financier over a loan of Rs 50,000. The incident came to light when the driver, identified as Basavaraj, recorded a video before taking the drastic step, detailing the pressure he was under due to mounting interest and threats.
Incident Details
Basavaraj, a resident of KR Puram, had borrowed Rs 50,000 from a financier named Mahendra a few months ago. According to police, the loan carried an exorbitant interest rate, and despite repaying a significant amount, the principal remained unpaid due to the compounding interest. The financier and his associates allegedly harassed Basavaraj continuously, demanding repayment and threatening him with dire consequences.
Video Recording
On Wednesday evening, Basavaraj recorded a video on his mobile phone, in which he named the financier and accused him of driving him to suicide. In the video, he expressed his inability to repay the loan and the mental agony caused by the constant harassment. He then consumed poison and died on the spot. The video was later recovered from his phone by his family, who handed it over to the police.
Police Investigation
The KR Puram police have registered a case of abetment to suicide against Mahendra and are investigating the matter. Police officials stated that the financier is being questioned, and further legal action will be taken based on the evidence, including the video recording. The body of Basavaraj has been sent for postmortem, and his family has been informed.
Family's Statement
Basavaraj's wife, who works as a domestic help, said her husband had been under severe stress for weeks. He had borrowed money to meet family expenses but was trapped by the high interest. She appealed to the authorities to take strict action against unlicensed financiers who exploit the poor. The couple has two young children, and the family is now struggling to make ends meet.
