Bengaluru Customs Makes Major Drug Bust at International Airport
In a significant crackdown on narcotics smuggling, customs officers at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) have seized a substantial quantity of high-value hydroponic ganja from passengers arriving from Bangkok. The operation, conducted at Terminal 2, resulted in the confiscation of 26.2 kilograms of the illicit substance, with an estimated street value of Rs 9.1 crore.
Targeted Operations Lead to Multiple Interceptions
According to official statements, the seizures were executed through meticulously planned operations based on advanced risk profiling and continuous passenger surveillance. The contraband was cleverly concealed within checked-in baggage across several separate interceptions, highlighting the sophisticated methods employed by smugglers.
The largest single haul involved two passengers who were intercepted carrying 17.9 kilograms of hydroponic ganja, valued at approximately Rs 6.3 crore. This substantial seizure represents the bulk of the total confiscated material and underscores the scale of the smuggling attempt.
Additional Cases and Arrests
In three other distinct incidents, individual passengers were apprehended with smaller but still significant quantities of the drug:
- One passenger was found with 4.9 kilograms, worth Rs 1.7 crore.
- Another carried 1.8 kilograms, valued at Rs 63.7 lakh.
- A third passenger had 1.5 kilograms, estimated at Rs 51.8 lakh.
All individuals involved in these cases have been promptly arrested under the stringent provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Legal proceedings are currently underway as authorities investigate the broader network behind these smuggling attempts.
Official Statement on Growing Smuggling Trend
An official familiar with the operations commented on the emerging patterns, stating, "These seizures point to a growing trend of organised smuggling through international routes, particularly from Southeast Asia. We are strengthening our surveillance mechanisms and enhancing coordination to combat such illicit activities effectively."
The official further emphasized that the use of hydroponic cultivation techniques, which typically produce higher potency cannabis, indicates a shift towards more premium and lucrative contraband in the illegal drug market. This development has prompted customs authorities to intensify their vigilance at major international entry points, including Bengaluru's KIA.
Authorities have assured the public that continuous monitoring and advanced profiling techniques are being deployed to identify and intercept suspicious activities. The successful busts are seen as a direct result of these enhanced security measures, which aim to disrupt the supply chains of narcotics entering the country through air travel.
