Bengaluru Fraud Suspect Apprehended in Goa Following Dramatic Casino Escape
In a significant law enforcement operation, the Panaji coastal security police have successfully arrested a Bengaluru man accused in a high-value fraud case amounting to Rs 6.3 crore in Karnataka. The suspect, identified as Gagan Deep, aged 32, had previously managed to escape from police custody under dramatic circumstances.
Details of the Fraud and Initial Arrest
The accused, a native of Chikballapur in Karnataka, was first arrested by Bengaluru police on March 31 of this year. He stands accused of allegedly defrauding a Bengaluru-based charitable trust of approximately Rs 6.3 crore. According to investigations, Deep impersonated himself as an official of a reputed multinational company to carry out the fraudulent activities.
Subsequently, on April 3, Bengaluru police brought him to Goa as part of their investigation to recover a portion of the defrauded money. It was reported that Deep had spent some of the illicit funds at a casino in the state.
The Casino Escape and Manhunt
On the night of April 4, while inside the casino premises, the accused took advantage of the crowded environment. In a bold move, he pushed the escorting officers and managed to escape custody, triggering a statewide manhunt.
Based on a formal complaint lodged by Police Inspector Rakesh C of Devanahalli police station, the Panaji coastal security police registered a First Information Report (FIR) under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). An intensive investigation was immediately launched, utilizing both human intelligence networks and advanced technical surveillance methods.
Tracking and Capture Operation
The breakthrough came when investigators traced the fugitive to Dodamarg. Acting on credible intelligence, a police team apprehended Gagan Deep from an eco-farm location in the area. He has since been brought back to Goa and formally placed under arrest by Panaji authorities.
The successful operation was led by Police Inspector Sajith Pillai of the Panaji coastal security police station. He was assisted by a dedicated team including Assistant Sub-Inspector Carlos Pontes, Head Constable Suryakant Bordekar, Police Constable Laxman Kauthankar, and Police Constable Rajesh Mardolkar. The entire operation was conducted under the supervision of Superintendent of Police Roy Pereira.
Legal Proceedings and Handover
The accused will now be handed over to Bengaluru police authorities, who are in the process of taking formal custody for further investigation and legal proceedings. This case highlights the challenges law enforcement faces when dealing with sophisticated financial crimes and the importance of inter-state cooperation in tracking down fugitives.
The arrest marks a significant victory for Goa's coastal security police, demonstrating their capability to handle complex cross-border criminal cases. The incident also raises questions about security protocols when transporting high-value suspects to crowded locations like casinos during investigation procedures.
