Bengaluru Machete Attack: Manager Brutally Assaulted Over Instagram Message Exchange
A seemingly innocent exchange of phone numbers on Instagram has allegedly escalated into a horrific machete attack on a 42-year-old apparel store manager in Bengaluru, sending shockwaves through the city's community. The violent incident, which occurred in broad daylight, highlights the dangerous potential of digital misunderstandings turning into physical confrontations.
Details of the Violent Assault
According to a detailed complaint filed by Gopi K, a resident of Murugeshpalya in east Bengaluru, the brutal attack took place between 12:30 PM and 1:00 PM on February 27th. The victim, who has worked as a manager at an apparel outlet on Siddhaiah Puranik Road in Basaveshwaranagar for nearly a decade, suffered significant injuries to his head and face during the assault.
Gopi is currently recovering after receiving extensive medical treatment at a private hospital located on West of Chord Road. The severity of his injuries underscores the vicious nature of the attack, which involved a dangerous weapon typically associated with extreme violence.
The Chain of Events Leading to Violence
The sequence of events began when Gopi received a simple "hi" message on Instagram from what appeared to be the account of Ashwini, a former colleague who had left the apparel store at the end of 2023 due to health issues. Following a brief digital exchange, Gopi was asked to share his mobile number, as it had allegedly been deleted from Ashwini's phone.
Soon after sharing his contact information, Gopi received a disturbing phone call from a man identifying himself as Suresh, who claimed to be Ashwini's husband. During this call, Suresh allegedly subjected Gopi to verbal abuse, accused him of inappropriately messaging his wife, and made derogatory remarks about Gopi's family. In response, Gopi disconnected the call and promptly blocked the number.
Escalation Despite Intervention Attempts
In an attempt to resolve the misunderstanding, Gopi later informed Ashwini's mother about the troubling incident. She reportedly asked Gopi to unblock Suresh's number and spoke directly to her son-in-law, warning him not to trouble Gopi further. However, this intervention proved ineffective in preventing further violence.
The following day, when Gopi stepped out of his workplace during business hours, Suresh allegedly arrived in an autorickshaw, deliberately blocked his path, subjected him to further verbal abuse, and launched a vicious attack using a machete. Before fleeing the scene, Suresh reportedly issued a chilling threat, warning Gopi that he would kill both him and his wife if he ever contacted Ashwini again.
Police Investigation and Legal Action
Local authorities have registered a formal case under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, India's comprehensive penal code. The accused, identified as Suresh, remains absconding as police intensify their efforts to trace and arrest him. The investigation is ongoing, with law enforcement officials examining all available evidence and witness statements to build a strong case against the perpetrator.
This disturbing incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly digital communications can escalate into real-world violence, particularly when combined with jealousy, misunderstanding, and unchecked aggression. The Bengaluru police have emphasized their commitment to ensuring the safety of citizens and bringing the accused to justice through proper legal channels.
