Bengaluru Man Arrested for Elaborate Gold Scam Targeting Priests' Families

In a shocking case of deception, a 50-year-old man has been arrested in Bengaluru for allegedly orchestrating a calculated scam to steal gold ornaments, primarily from the wives of priests and other women in their families. The accused, identified as Praveen Bhat, exploited religious trust by claiming the jewelry was necessary for various rituals.

Modus Operandi: Winning Trust Before Striking

According to police officials, Bhat's method was both systematic and manipulative. He would first befriend priests by making regular visits to temples and establishing credibility through what appeared to be generous financial contributions. This long-term approach allowed him to build significant trust within these religious communities.

"In the latest incident, he informed a priest from Prakashnagar that he was opening a new shop and requested the priest's wife to accompany him as a symbol of good fortune, citing her status as a 'Muttaide' (a married woman whose husband is alive)," explained DCP BS Nemagoud of the north division. "Since Bhat had visited the priest on numerous occasions, the family trusted him completely and agreed to the request."

The Theft and Investigation Details

During the auto-rickshaw journey near KR Market, Bhat cunningly asked the woman to remove her gold chain and finger ring for safety reasons. Once she complied, he pocketed the ornaments and fled the scene. The stolen items were later assessed to be worth approximately Rs 4.5 lakh.

Following the complaint filed by the victim, Rajajinagar police launched an investigation that led them to Bhat's residence on Hosur Road. During the arrest, authorities recovered 115 grams of gold ornaments that Bhat had previously pledged at various jewelry shops.

Pattern of Criminal Activity

This is not an isolated incident. Police records indicate that seven similar cases have been filed against Bhat in the past, revealing a consistent pattern of targeting vulnerable individuals through religious pretexts. Bhat, originally from Bhadravati in Shivamogga district, had been residing in Bengaluru where he executed these schemes.

The investigation highlights how criminals can exploit cultural and religious practices for personal gain, emphasizing the need for increased awareness and caution even within trusted community circles.
