The complainant, a single parent residing in the Thyagarajanagar area of Bengaluru, reported to the police that around 250 grams of gold ornaments and 2.8 kilograms of silver items had gone missing from a cupboard located in her daughter's room. Initially, the family's suspicions fell upon their long-serving domestic help, who had been employed with them for an impressive 25 years and possessed a spare key to the house. This suspicion was understandable given the helper's prolonged access and familiarity with the household.
Police Investigation and Breakthrough
However, a dedicated police team, led by Inspector Savitha, delved deeper into the case and uncovered a different narrative. Their investigation traced the involvement not to the domestic helper, but to her nephew, identified as Sharath. Sharath, a school dropout who worked as a car cleaner, had lost his parents at a young age and was raised by his aunt. The police revealed that Sharath frequently visited the house under the pretext of dropping off his aunt and assisting with various chores, which allowed him to become well-acquainted with the premises.
Modus Operandi and Recovery of Stolen Items
According to police statements, Sharath allegedly took the spare key from his aunt without her knowledge. He then exploited an opportunity when the family was out of the city, entering the house and stealing the ornaments. With his arrest, law enforcement officials successfully recovered 24 grams of gold ornaments, the entire 2.8 kilograms of silver articles, and an additional Rs 1.3 lakh in cash. This recovery marks a partial restitution of the stolen property, as the original theft involved a larger quantity of gold.
