Police in Odisha's Ganjam district have made swift arrests in a shocking case of violence that resulted in the death of an 85-year-old man. The incident, which underscores severe law and order concerns in rural areas, occurred in a village near Berhampur.
The Tragic Sequence of Events
According to police inspector Kishor Chandra Samal, the roots of Thursday's violence trace back to an alleged crime on Tuesday. One of the accused, a 25-year-old man, is suspected of raping a 16-year-old relative of the elderly victim. This heinous act set the stage for the tragic confrontation two days later.
On Thursday, the octogenarian was engaged in a discussion with other villagers about the rape case and the involvement of the accused duo. The conversation reached the ears of the two accused, who then arrived at the spot. A heated argument erupted between them and the elderly man.
The Fatal Assault and Aftermath
In a fit of rage, one of the accused struck the 85-year-old man on the head with a wooden stick. The blow was so severe that the victim collapsed, lost consciousness, and later succumbed to his injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Following the assault, both accused, who are co-villagers of the deceased, fled from the scene. Acting promptly, the police registered a case on Friday and launched a search operation.

The Ganjam police conducted raids at the homes of the suspects and successfully apprehended both individuals on Friday. The accused, both aged 25, are now in custody facing serious charges.
