Violent Assault on Bescom Staff During Midnight Repair Operation in Bengaluru
A routine midnight repair call escalated into a violent confrontation for Bescom employees in the Thyagarajanagar area of Bengaluru on Sunday, leaving the utility workers injured and shaken. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, highlights the risks faced by essential service personnel while performing their duties.
Midnight Emergency Turns Dangerous
According to a formal complaint filed by lineman Basavaraj S Dinni of Bescom unit-2, the trouble began at approximately 1 am when he received an emergency call regarding a snapped electric wire near the Muneshwara temple. Dinni promptly assembled a team consisting of colleague Kiran Tarase and driver Prakash to address the potentially hazardous situation.
The team first conducted an initial assessment of the damaged electrical infrastructure before returning to their office to collect necessary repair equipment. They gathered a ladder, replacement wires, and other essential tools required to safely restore power to the affected area.
Roadside Confrontation Escalates to Violence
As the Bescom van was parked on the roadside while the team prepared their equipment, two unidentified men arrived on a scooter and initiated a confrontation. The assailants allegedly began verbally abusing the utility workers and questioning the placement of their service vehicle.
The situation deteriorated rapidly when one attacker reportedly struck lineman Dinni in the right eye with a stone, while the second assailant assaulted him from behind. When colleagues Tarase and Prakash attempted to intervene and protect their teammate, they too were subjected to physical attacks by the violent duo.
The attackers fled the scene after issuing explicit death threats against the Bescom linemen, leaving the utility workers injured and traumatized by the unexpected assault.Police Investigation and Medical Treatment
The quick-thinking Bescom staff managed to note the scooter's registration number as KA-05-KN-8585 before the assailants escaped. Following the attack, the injured workers first sought medical attention at Victoria Hospital, where they received treatment for their wounds.
After being medically assessed, the Bescom team approached the Banashankari police station to file a formal complaint about the violent incident. Police authorities have launched an investigation into the assault based on the provided vehicle registration details and descriptions of the attackers.
Broader Implications for Essential Workers
This disturbing incident raises significant concerns about the safety of utility workers who perform critical repair services during unconventional hours. Bescom employees regularly respond to emergency calls throughout the night to maintain electrical infrastructure and ensure public safety.
The violent attack on these public service employees underscores the vulnerability of essential workers who put themselves at risk to maintain vital services for Bengaluru residents. As the investigation continues, authorities are examining surveillance footage from the area and following leads based on the scooter registration number provided by the victims. The Bescom administration has expressed concern over the safety of their field staff and is coordinating with law enforcement to ensure such incidents are prevented in the future.
