The brutal rape and murder of a ten-year-old girl in Odisha's Bhadrak district has been officially classified as a 'red flag' case, signifying the highest priority for investigation and monitoring. Director General of Police (DGP) YB Khurania made the announcement on Thursday, underscoring the gravity of the crime that has horrified the state.
Top-Priority Probe and Swift Arrest
Describing the incident in Chandabali block as "deeply shocking," DGP Khurania confirmed that the key accused has already been apprehended from Jagatsinghpur. He stated that marking the case as 'red flag' ensures high-level supervision, a priority investigation, and expedited court proceedings. A chargesheet is mandated to be filed within 30 days, he added.
The horrific crime occurred on Tuesday in Baligaon village, sending shockwaves across the region. The girl's blood-stained body was discovered near the local panchayat office, triggering immediate public fury. On Wednesday, enraged residents staged road blockades demanding immediate arrests. Following the arrest of one accused, locals allegedly vandalized his house.
Political Outcry and Widespread Bandh
The incident triggered sharp political reactions, leading to a complete shutdown in Chandabali. The Biju Janata Dal (BJD), led by local MLA Byomakesh Ray, observed a six-hour market shutdown on Thursday. Party workers burned tyres, staged sit-ins, and picketed during the protest. Ray linked the tragedy to the "rampant illegal liquor trade in the area" and demanded strict legal action.
Similarly, the Congress party, under Digambar Das, called for a 12-hour bandh. Both parties condemned the "shameful" incident and accused the state government of failing to maintain law and order. Activists from Left parties also joined the protests.
Daily life ground to a halt as shops, markets, and business establishments remained closed. Vehicular movement was severely disrupted as bandh supporters blocked major roads by setting tyres ablaze. DIG (eastern range) Pinak Mishra stated that no violence was reported during the shutdown, which was enforced under tight security. Eight platoons of police force were deployed at sensitive locations to prevent any breach of peace.
