A court in Bhubaneswar on Saturday sentenced a theft accused to 2 years and 6 months of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 30,000, concluding the trial in just 22 days from the registration of the case. The convicted individual was identified as Manoj Kumar Samantaray, also known as Minja.
Details of the Incident
On the night of May 4, Sushanta Behera and his family members were asleep at their residence when Samantaray entered the house with the intent to commit theft. The accused opened a box kept near Behera’s head and attempted to steal valuables from it. Hearing some noise, the complainant woke up and spotted the accused inside the house. He immediately raised an alarm and chased him with the help of a torchlight. During the chase, the complainant identified the individual as Minja. However, the accused managed to escape.
Stolen Items and Arrest
Upon checking the box and other items in the house, the complainant discovered that a Mangalsutra, a pair of gold earrings, and a pair of silver bangles had been stolen. Samantaray was arrested on May 9 and produced in court. Subsequently, a chargesheet was filed against him on May 15.

The court expedited the trial, ensuring swift justice. The accused was found guilty and sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for 2 years and 6 months, along with a fine of Rs 30,000. This case highlights the efficiency of the judicial system in delivering timely verdicts.
