Bicholim police on Saturday morning arrested two residents of Shirgao, Bicholim, for firing gunshots during an argument with a relative over a family dispute. The accused, identified as Prajyot alias Shirish Laxman Gaonkar and Girish Laxman Gaonkar, both residents of Madhalawada, Shirgao, allegedly threatened and attempted to kill a senior citizen, Upendra Chandra Gaonkar.
Sequence of Events
The incident began on Friday evening when the accused first phoned Upendra, a 66-year-old senior citizen, and subjected him to abusive language and death threats. Later, at around 8:29 pm, the duo entered Upendra's house. When Upendra arrived near his residence, he was startled to find Prajyot waiting in the veranda, armed with a firearm and ammunition.
Prajyot threatened to kill Upendra on the spot, deliberately aimed the gun directly at him, and fired a round. However, the complainant managed to escape. The accused then followed him inside the house and allegedly terrorized Upendra's family with the firearm.
Threats to Family Members
Prajyot raised the firearm towards Upendra's wife and threatened to kill her. She too managed to escape, fleeing through the back door and running to safety into another house. Subsequently, Prajyot and Shirish criminally trespassed into the nearby residence of the complainant's cousin, Nagesh Gaonkar, while carrying the firearm, in search of her. The police stated that the duo caused extreme fear and alarm to the occupants.
Legal Action
Bicholim police have registered offenses including attempt to murder, criminal trespass, and aggravated criminal intimidation, among others. Both accused persons were arrested on Saturday morning.
