Vigilance Bureau Nabs Two Bihar Officials in Separate Bribery Sting Operations

In a significant crackdown on corruption, the Vigilance Investigation Bureau (VIB) in Bihar apprehended two government officials on Tuesday for allegedly accepting bribes in distinct incidents. The arrests underscore ongoing efforts to combat graft within the state's administrative machinery.

First Arrest: Survey Official in Supaul District

The initial case involved Vikram Kumar Ram, a survey "amin" stationed at the Marauna circle in Supaul district. He was taken into custody while purportedly receiving a bribe of Rs 20,000 at his rented residence in Ward Number 1 under the Nirmali Nagar panchayat.

The complaint was lodged by Jayanarayan Yadav, a resident of Khorma village under the Marauna police station jurisdiction. Yadav alleged that Vikram had demanded the bribe to expedite pending survey work related to his land. Following a thorough verification process and evidence collection confirming the illicit demand, a formal case was registered on February 23.

An investigative team, spearheaded by Narendra Kumar, Deputy Superintendent of Police at the VIB Patna office, was swiftly assembled. "The team successfully laid a trap and arrested the accused on the spot while he was receiving the bribe amount. After preliminary questioning, Vikram will be produced before the special court of vigilance in Bhagal," stated DSP Kumar.

Second Arrest: Supply Officer in Samastipur District

In a concurrent operation, the VIB apprehended Rajesh Kumar Bhagat, the block supply officer for Vidyapati Nagar and Ujiarpur Block in Samastipur district. He was caught allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 at his rented accommodation near Kali Chowk under the Dalsinghsarai police station area.

The complaint in this instance was filed by Ram Iqbal Singh, a resident of Maniyarpur under the Ghatho police station. Singh accused the block supply officer of demanding the bribe in exchange for increasing additional food grain allocations under the public distribution system. After verifying the allegations and registering the case, a trap was executed by a team led by Akhilesh Kumar, DSP of the VIB Patna.

The accused was captured red-handed while accepting the bribe and arrested immediately. "He will be produced before the special court of vigilance in Muzaffarpur following interrogation," the officer confirmed.

Implications and Broader Context

These arrests highlight the Vigilance Investigation Bureau's proactive stance in tackling corruption at various levels of government in Bihar. The operations demonstrate a commitment to upholding integrity within public services, particularly in sectors like land survey and food distribution, which directly impact citizens' livelihoods.

The swift action taken by the VIB teams, involving meticulous planning and execution of traps, sends a strong message against unethical practices. As the cases proceed through the special vigilance courts, they are expected to serve as deterrents to other officials engaged in similar misconduct.

Authorities continue to encourage citizens to report such incidents, emphasizing that robust complaints and evidence are crucial for effective anti-corruption measures. The bureau's efforts align with broader state and national initiatives aimed at promoting transparency and accountability in governance.
