In a shocking incident early on New Year's Day, a traffic police constable in Mumbai was deliberately rammed by a motorcyclist who then fled the scene. The attack occurred during a routine drunk-driving checkpoint, leaving the officer injured.
Constable Injured During Nakabandi Duty
The incident took place in the Worli area of Mumbai in the early hours of Thursday, around 3:30 am. Police teams from Tardeo and the traffic department had set up a nakabandi (blockade) to check for motorists driving under the influence on New Year's Eve. Barricades were placed on the road to stop vehicles for inspection.
According to officials, Police Constable Asish Nigot signaled an approaching biker to stop. Ignoring the directive, the rider accelerated and crashed directly into Nigot. The impact was severe, causing the constable to fall onto the road.
Police Launch Manhunt for Fleeing Biker
Following the assault, fellow officers immediately rushed Constable Nigot to Nair Hospital for treatment. He sustained injuries to his legs and hands but is reported to be in stable condition.
Law enforcement has swung into action to track down the perpetrator. A senior police officer confirmed that the bike's number plate has been identified and the registered owner has been contacted. Investigations are actively underway to locate the rider who committed the act and fled.
Heightened Vigilance on Festive Nights
This attack underscores the risks faced by police personnel during heightened vigilances, especially on festive nights like New Year's Eve. Nakabandi operations are standard procedure to curb drunk driving and ensure road safety, but they sometimes lead to confrontations with uncooperative motorists.
The Mumbai Police have registered a case and are pursuing all leads. The search for the accused biker continues as authorities work to ensure such brazen acts against on-duty officers do not go unpunished.
