BJP Corporator Laxman Jangam Faces Sexual Assault FIR Under BNS Section 69 in Mumbai
The Mira Road police in Mumbai have registered a sexual assault First Information Report (FIR) against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporator Laxman Jangam from the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation. The case has been filed under the newly implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 69, which specifically criminalises sexual relations induced by a false promise of marriage, distinguishing it from the offence of rape.
Allegations and Cross-Complaint Details
In her complaint, the woman alleged that in July 2022, Jangam called her to his office located in Mira Road East. She claimed that he induced her into a physical relationship based on an assurance of marriage. According to the FIR, the woman stated that Jangam "exploited" her at multiple locations, including his office and a lodge. She further accused him of threatening her with serious consequences if she approached the police or disclosed the matter to anyone.
Immediately after the case was registered against him, Laxman Jangam filed a cross-complaint against the woman. In his complaint, Jangam alleged that the woman had demanded flats, shops, and gold from him, and had even attempted to blackmail him. Following this, the police registered a cross FIR against the woman based on Jangam's allegations.
Police Investigation and Current Status
The Mira Road police have confirmed that they are actively investigating both cases. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with either complaint. Authorities are examining the evidence and statements from both parties to determine the facts of the matter.
This case highlights the application of BNS Section 69, which addresses situations where sexual relations are obtained through deceitful promises, without constituting rape. The legal proceedings are ongoing, with police urging all involved to cooperate fully as the investigation progresses.
