Coimbatore city police have made a significant arrest, taking into custody nine individuals, including a local BJP functionary, on charges of violently assaulting two employees of an event management company. The incident, which involved weapons like sickles and bottles, has sent shockwaves through the city.
The Arrests and Identities of the Accused
The police action took place on Thursday following a detailed investigation. The primary accused has been identified as B Ragu Surya, 29, who serves as the BJP youth wing secretary for the Erode North district. The other eight men arrested in connection with the case are S Mohammed Umar (26), P Udayadeepan (28), L Vinothkumar (25), S Vathanayagam (26), S Suryakumar (27), R Deepak (27), M Sreeman (24), and R Richard (26). All were subsequently remanded to judicial custody.
Sequence of Events: From Party Brawl to Planned Attack
The roots of the conflict trace back to an event on December 20. A company named Big Daddy had organized a party at a five-star hotel in Neelambur, which Ragu Surya and his friends attended. Reports indicate that a minor clash broke out while they were dancing under the influence of alcohol. Staff members from the event management firm intervened, and in the process, allegedly assaulted Surya and his group.
This earlier altercation appears to have triggered a retaliatory attack. On Wednesday night, the nine-member gang learned that the same event management company was conducting another program at a hotel in Peelamedu. They lay in wait outside the venue. When two staff members, Surya and Devaraj, exited the hotel, the gang intercepted them.
The assailants attacked the duo with sickles, bottles, and stones, causing injuries that required medical treatment. The car the victims were travelling in was also damaged in the assault. Based on a formal complaint filed by the injured staff who are currently undergoing treatment, the Peelamedu police registered a case and launched the investigation that led to the arrests.
Police Investigation and Seizures
Following the arrests, the Coimbatore police conducted searches and made crucial recoveries linked to the crime. Law enforcement officials seized two sickles, a car, and an SUV from the possession of the arrested individuals. These items are believed to have been used during the commission of the offense. The swift police action in registering the case, apprehending the accused, and recovering potential evidence has been noted. The case continues to be under investigation as the accused face legal proceedings in judicial custody.
