Silchar Police Crack Down on Alleged Cough Syrup Trafficking Ring
In a significant operation on Saturday, police in Silchar made a major breakthrough against an alleged cough syrup trafficking racket. Officers seized approximately 1,200 bottles of banned cough syrup during a raid. They also arrested a local BJP functionary in connection with the case.
Details of the Arrest and Seizure
The arrested individual has been identified as Pulak Das. He serves as the president of the BJP SC Morcha’s West Katigorah Mandal in Cachar district. Acting on a specific tip-off, a police team conducted a raid at a transport company’s warehouse located on Radhamadhab Road in Silchar.
During the raid, investigators recovered the contraband cough syrup. The bottles were stored in ten cartons inside the warehouse. Following this seizure, police traced the consignment back to Das, who is a resident of Katigorah. Officers then arrested him from his home.
Trafficking Route and Legal Proceedings
According to police sources, the banned syrup followed a specific transportation route. It was first moved from Gujarat to Guwahati. From Guwahati, it was brought to Silchar. The alleged plan involved trafficking the cough syrup across the border into Bangladesh.
The accused, Pulak Das, was produced before a local court after his arrest. The court remanded him to two days of police custody for further interrogation and investigation.
This arrest highlights ongoing efforts by Assam police to combat illegal drug trafficking networks in the region. The seizure of such a large quantity of banned cough syrup points to a potentially organized operation.
