BJP Leader's Tragic Family Murder-Suicide in Bicholim Sends Shockwaves Across Goa
In a deeply disturbing incident that has left the community reeling, a father allegedly killed his son before taking his own life in Bicholim on Monday. The tragedy unfolded as the father reportedly believed his son would become a future nuisance to society, according to police findings.
Details of the Heartbreaking Incident
Sanjay Mhapsekar, 59, who served as the general secretary of the BJP's Bicholim mandal, is alleged to have killed his son, Sanchit, before dying by suicide through consumption of a toxic substance. The incident came to light around 6 PM on Monday when Sanjay's daughter returned home from work, discovering the horrific scene.
Police investigation revealed that Sanchit had previously filed a complaint against his father at the Bicholim police station regarding minor domestic issues. According to a suicide note recovered from the residence, Sanjay expressed being deeply upset and under the impression that his son's violent and unacceptable behavior might endanger both his own future and that of his daughter.
Police Investigation and Forensic Findings
Bicholim police conducted a thorough investigation at the scene, with forensic teams including the FSL team, dog squad, and fingerprint experts documenting evidence. Police formalities were meticulously observed, with relevant exhibits properly attached for further analysis.
Dr. Pannag S. Kumar, assistant professor of forensic medicine and toxicology at GMC, conducted the post-mortem examination on Sanjay's body and determined the cause of death as "asphyxia as a result of cerebral and pulmonary edema and congestion consequent to consumption of a poisonous/toxic substance."
Separate post-mortem examination on Sanchit's body revealed the cause of death as "asphyxia as a result of manual strangulation (throttling), which was fatal in the ordinary course of nature."
Family Background and Relationship Dynamics
The suicide note provided crucial insights into the deteriorating relationship between father and son. According to police statements, the document revealed that their relationship had become increasingly strained over issues related to studies, curriculum, and behavioral concerns.
Police confirmed that Sanjay's wife had passed away approximately four years ago due to health issues, leaving only the daughter as the surviving family member following this latest tragedy.
Official Police Statement
Bicholim PI Vijai Rane Sardesai provided a clear assessment of the incident, stating: "It is crystal clear Sanjay committed murder of his minor son by strangulation or throttling. Sanjay, after committing the murder, died by suicide and ended his own life by consuming poisonous/toxic substance."
The police investigation continues to examine all aspects of this tragic case, which has raised serious concerns about family dynamics, mental health awareness, and community support systems in the region.
