A local BJP mediator and another man were hospitalised on Tuesday after a property dispute at Maqsudan's wholesale vegetable market escalated into a shootout, which occurred in the presence of police. The injured mediator, Mukesh Kumar 'Monu' Puri, serves as the head of the local Arhatiya Association. Police commissioner Dhanpreet Kaur confirmed that Puri sustained gunshot wounds to both feet during a meeting intended to resolve a disagreement with a neighbour over shop ownership.
Details of the Incident
The violence erupted around 5:30 pm as dozens of supporters from both factions gathered at the market. CCTV footage captured a chaotic scene where two aggressive groups clashed before two gunshots rang out, causing bystanders to flee. The video reportedly shows at least one police officer present during the melee. In the footage, Puri is seen collapsing onto gunny sacks after being hit, before staggering back to his feet. A man from the rival faction, identified as Karam, also sustained gunshot wounds.
Response and Investigation
Former MLA Sheetal Angural stated that Puri is out of danger and receiving medical treatment. Police are now examining CCTV footage to identify who initiated the shooting during the police-monitored meeting. The Maqsudan wholesale vegetable market remained tense on Tuesday evening, with police cordoning off the shooting site. Authorities have heightened security in the area to prevent further escalation.
