The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has suspended assistant municipal commissioner Mahesh Patil of the K/North ward following the registration of a cheating and forgery case worth Rs 16.2 crore by the Mumbai Crime Branch. The case was filed based on a complaint lodged by Habiba Jaaferi, wife of actor Jaaved Jaaferi.
Case Details
The Crime Branch is currently searching for Patil, who is reported to be absconding. In her complaint, Habiba alleged that Patil lured her family into investing in a Bandra redevelopment project using forged government documents and false promises of high returns. She first met Patil at his BMC office in April 2024 to seek clarification on a tax-related matter. During this meeting, Patil allegedly informed her about an investment opportunity in the redevelopment project and advised her to channel funds through co-accused Nishit Patel.
Arrests Made
The Crime Branch has arrested Patel and another accused, Rupesh More, in connection with the case. Patil has been placed under suspension under the provisions of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (Services) Rules, 1989, pending investigation into the offenses registered against him.
BMC's Action
A BMC official stated, “Patil was on sanctioned leave till May 18, after which he sought an extension of leave during which period the FIR was filed.” The suspension order, a copy of which was accessed by The Times of India, warns that disciplinary action will be initiated against officials who fail to comply with the prescribed procedure for implementing the suspension order. The BMC has directed the establishment department to complete all formalities expeditiously and submit a compliance report to the General Administration Department.
