Bokaro Police Crack Eight-Month-Old Murder Mystery, Arrest Accused and Recover Victim's Remains

In a significant breakthrough, Bokaro police have claimed to have solved a chilling eight-month-old missing girl case, culminating in the arrest of a 26-year-old man for allegedly murdering the victim. The police have also recovered the victim's body parts and crucial evidence from a jungle, bringing a tragic saga to a close.

Arrest and Confession in the Pushpa Mahto Murder Case

The accused, identified as Dinesh Kumar Mahto, was apprehended by authorities on Saturday. During intensive questioning, Mahto confessed to the brutal murder of 18-year-old Pushpa Mahto, which occurred on July 21 last year near Chas college. According to police statements, the motive behind the crime stemmed from Mahto being pressured for marriage by the victim.

Bokaro Superintendent of Police, Harvinder Singh, revealed that the investigation uncovered that Pushpa Mahto had been in contact with the accused for nearly three years. "Mahto had friendships with many girls, but as Pushpa pressured him for marriage, he meticulously planned and executed her murder," Singh stated, highlighting the premeditated nature of the crime.

Recovery of Evidence and Suspensions Over Dereliction of Duty

Following his confession, Dinesh Kumar Mahto led police to a remote jungle site where skeletal remains, clothing, hair, and the murder weapon were recovered. This critical evidence has been pivotal in building the case against him. Additionally, police have seized four mobile phones and twenty-three SIM cards from the accused, suggesting potential further investigative angles.

In a related development, five officers, including the officer-in-charge, and a clerk from Pindrajoda police station were suspended for dereliction of duty. SP Harvinder Singh confirmed that the suspended personnel include OC Abhishek Ranjan, investigating officer Aniket Kumar, sub-inspectors Vivek Pandey and Anil Yadav, and clerk Akshay Kumar. This action underscores the lapses in the initial investigation phase.

Timeline of the Case and Judicial Intervention

The case dates back to July 24, 2025, when Rekha Devi reported her daughter Pushpa missing from Khuntadih village. An FIR was registered on August 4 under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against unknown persons. Dissatisfied with the sluggish pace of the probe, Rekha Devi moved the Jharkhand High Court, which strongly criticized Bokaro police for their slow response.

The court's stern observations led to the suspension of Pindrajoda police station OC Abhishek Ranjan and the establishment of a one-man commission. DIG-rank officer Sandhya Rani Mehta was deputed to Bokaro to ensure a fair and transparent inquiry. Subsequently, a Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by DSP (City) Alok Ranjan, was formed, which ultimately cracked the case using a combination of technical and human intelligence.

This resolution marks a somber end to a prolonged investigation, emphasizing the importance of judicial oversight and dedicated police work in addressing serious crimes.
