Patiala Schools Face Bomb Threat Emails, Prompting Mass Evacuations and Security Response
Panic swept through Patiala on Thursday as numerous prominent educational institutions received bomb threat emails, triggering immediate evacuations and a massive security mobilization across the city.
Widespread Threats and Emergency Protocols
Police confirmed that at least 12 institutions, including the prestigious Yadavindra Public School (YPS) and Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) in Patiala, were targeted with threatening emails on Thursday morning. School authorities swiftly activated emergency protocols, moving students from classrooms to open areas as a precautionary measure.
Parents were urgently contacted to collect their children, creating a rush that led to temporary traffic congestion in key areas such as Urban Estate and Mall Road. The chaotic scenes reflected the seriousness with which authorities treated the threats.
Comprehensive Security Deployment
Patiala Police, under the leadership of DSP Satnam Singh and SP (Investigation) Gurbans Bains, responded with overwhelming force. Bomb disposal squads, sniffer dogs, and anti-sabotage teams were deployed to all affected campuses to conduct thorough searches.
The security response was particularly heightened due to the presence of Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, who was in the city to attend an annual function at Punjabi University. This added layer of concern prompted even more rigorous security measures.
No Suspicious Items Found, Pattern of Hoaxes Emerges
After exhaustive searches at all locations mentioned in the emails, police reported finding nothing suspicious. Investigators noted striking similarities between these threats and recent bomb threat messages received by institutions in Chandigarh and Jalandhar on April 6, which were later declared hoaxes.
Officials also pointed to the recent bomb hoax at Patiala district courts, suggesting the latest threats fit a broader pattern of coordinated scare messages designed to disrupt normal activities and test emergency responses.
Third Major Wave of School Threats This Year
This incident represents the third significant wave of school-related bomb scare emails in Punjab during the current year. In February, 16 schools in Mohali were evacuated under similar circumstances, while in December 2025, schools in Jalandhar, Amritsar, and Patiala also received such threats.
The recurrence of these incidents has raised serious concerns about the vulnerability of educational institutions to cyber-enabled threats and the psychological impact on students, parents, and staff.
Cybercrime Investigation and Official Warnings
Cybercrime teams are actively tracing the origin of the threatening emails. Officials suspect a coordinated hoax or "swatting" campaign aimed at creating widespread panic and testing police response capabilities.
Authorities have issued urgent appeals to parents and residents, urging them to rely only on official police updates and avoid sharing unverified messages on social media platforms. The emphasis on verified information aims to prevent the spread of misinformation that could exacerbate public anxiety.
