Mumbai: The Borivli Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against a police constable and two unidentified individuals for allegedly assaulting a lawyer on a street outside the Borivali magistrate court premises. The incident took place on Monday evening, but the FIR was filed early Wednesday following a protest by advocates from the Borivli Bar Association. In a parallel development, police have also lodged a counter FIR against the lawyer, accusing him of obstructing a government servant from performing his duties. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with either case.
Lawyer's Version of Events
According to the complaint filed by the lawyer, he was waiting on his motorcycle for an associate to join him when an altercation erupted with an autorickshaw driver between 8:15 pm and 8:30 pm. The lawyer alleges that the constable subsequently intervened and physically assaulted him without provocation. The lawyer stated that he was roughed up by the constable, leading to injuries.
Constable's Counter-Complaint
In contrast, the constable's complaint presents a different narrative. The constable claims that the lawyer was in an inebriated state and attacked the autorickshaw driver. Additionally, the lawyer is accused of using abusive language towards the constable when he attempted to intervene. The constable's version suggests that the lawyer was the aggressor, and the constable was merely performing his duty to maintain law and order.
Protest by Advocates
The delay in registering the FIR prompted a protest by members of the Borivli Bar Association, who gathered outside the police station demanding action against the constable. Their demonstration led to the registration of the FIR early Wednesday. The bar association has condemned the alleged assault and called for a fair investigation.
Police have stated that both FIRs are under investigation, and further action will be taken based on evidence collected. The incident has highlighted tensions between legal professionals and law enforcement in the area.
