Tragic Boulder Accident Claims Life of Man at Harishchandragad Fort Near Pune
A devastating incident unfolded on Sunday morning at Harishchandragad fort, located approximately 120 kilometers from Pune, resulting in the death of a 35-year-old man. The victim, identified as Suresh Damse from Ghodegaon in Ambegaon taluka, was struck by a falling boulder while descending the fort, leading to fatal injuries.
Details of the Harishchandragad Fort Incident
The accident occurred around 10:30 AM as Damse was making his way down from the Junnar Darwaja side of the fort. According to Pune Rural police, he had visited the site early in the morning to offer prayers at the Shiva temple atop Harishchandragad, coinciding with the Mahashivratri festival. Rupesh Jagtap of the Junnar Rescue Team explained that a loose boulder suddenly dislodged and crashed down, hitting Damse directly on the head.
Jagtap recounted, "Damse fell unconscious immediately after the impact. Upon receiving the news, our rescue team and local volunteers rushed to the spot to assist." The challenging terrain of the fort made the rescue operation particularly difficult. The team constructed a makeshift stretcher to carry Damse, navigating a rugged 5-kilometer route to transport him down to Khireshwar village at the foothills.
Rescue Efforts and Fatal Outcome
From Khireshwar village, Damse was transferred to an ambulance and taken to a nearby hospital. However, Assistant Police Inspector Lahu Thate of the Otur police confirmed that doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival. "We are in the process of registering a case of accidental death," Thate stated, highlighting the ongoing investigation into the tragic event.
The incident has cast a shadow over the Mahashivratri celebrations, with many devotees having climbed the fort for religious observances. Authorities are urging caution for trekkers and visitors in such mountainous regions, especially during peak festival times when foot traffic increases.
