Tragic Drowning of 9-Year-Old Boy at Delhi Construction Site
A heartbreaking incident in New Delhi has highlighted severe lapses in construction site safety, resulting in the tragic death of a young boy. Nine-year-old Shreyansh, a Class IV student at MCD Primary Boys’ School and resident of Tughlakabad village, drowned last week after falling into an underground water tank at an under-construction building.
Details of the Fatal Incident
According to police reports, the incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon around 1 pm. Shreyansh was returning home from school with his 11-year-old sister when he decided to play with two classmates, despite his sister's objections. To avoid being seen, the boy and one friend entered the construction site in Tughlakabad village.
"Due to poor lighting, Shreyansh did not see the 7-foot-deep water tank and fell in," stated DCP (southeast) Hemant Tiwari, describing the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
Rescue Attempt and Aftermath
After being alerted by one of the friends, Shreyansh's father—who reportedly runs a tea stall in the local market—rushed to the scene. He managed to pull his son from the tank, administered CPR, and immediately took him to a nearby hospital. Despite these desperate efforts, doctors declared the boy dead upon arrival.
Gross Safety Violations Identified
Police investigation revealed multiple safety failures at the construction site:
- No security guards to restrict entry
- Absence of barricades around the water tank
- No covering on the tank itself
- Lack of warning signs for passers-by or children
- Inadequate lighting throughout the premises
A police officer emphasized that these conditions created a hazardous environment, directly contributing to the fatal accident.
Legal Action Against Building Owner
The owner of the under-construction building, identified as 60-year-old Jagdish, also a resident of Tughlakabad village, has been arrested. Authorities registered a case under Sections 290 (negligent conduct with respect to pulling down, repairing or constructing buildings) and 106 (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Govindpuri police station.
This tragic incident underscores the critical importance of implementing proper safety measures at construction sites, particularly in residential areas where children may be present. The community mourns the loss of young Shreyansh while authorities pursue justice through legal channels.
