BSF jawan among 3 dead in Barnala fog accident

A tragic road accident in Punjab's Barnala district on Tuesday morning claimed three lives, including that of a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan. The fatal collision occurred due to low visibility caused by dense fog enveloping the area.

Details of the Fatal Collision

The accident took place at a toll plaza in Mallian village. A family from Kaka Kandiala village in Tarn Taran was travelling to Sirsa in Haryana in two vehicles—a car and an SUV. According to initial reports, the car, leading the way, hit a divider at the toll plaza and overturned. The SUV following it could not avoid a collision and rammed into the damaged car.

The impact resulted in the deaths of three occupants of the car. They have been identified as BSF Jawan Sandeep Masih, his cousin Arshdeep Masih, and a woman named Anu. Four other persons in the car sustained serious injuries. One of the injured, Monika, was reportedly on her way for her engagement ceremony. The occupants of the SUV escaped with minor injuries.

Rescue and Police Investigation

Personnel from the Sadak Suraksha Force, along with local villagers, rushed to the spot. They pulled out the injured from the badly mutilated vehicles and rushed them to the Barnala civil hospital. Three of the victims were declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Preliminary police information indicates that BSF jawan Sandeep Masih was on leave for his sister's engagement. Barnala's Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Sarfaraz Alam, commented on the incident. He stated that instructions have been issued to install more reflectors on dividers. This measure aims to enhance visibility for drivers during the foggy winter season.

Ongoing Concerns Over Fog-Related Safety

This tragic incident highlights the persistent danger posed by dense fog on North Indian roads during winter. The police have emphasized the need for improved road infrastructure, like reflective markers, to prevent such accidents. The exact posting location of the deceased BSF jawan is not yet known. The community is mourning the loss, particularly the young life that was to be celebrated with an engagement.
