Hyderabad Engineering Graduate Turns to Chain Snatching Amid Financial Crisis
Police in Hyderabad have arrested a 23-year-old woman for chain snatching in the Sanathnagar area. The accused, identified as Anitha Reddy, holds a BTech degree and previously worked in Chennai's automobile sector.
From Engineering Graduate to Accused
Anitha Reddy comes from Warangal and completed her engineering education there. She moved to Chennai for employment in the automobile industry. Two years ago, she left her job after marrying Rajesh, who works for a private finance company in Medchal.
The couple currently resides in Borabanda with their one-year-old daughter. Financial pressures mounted as Rajesh accumulated approximately seven lakh rupees in debt. With Anitha unemployed, the family faced growing economic distress.
The Desperate Crime
On January 12 around noon, Anitha traveled to Avanthi Nagar Thota in Sanathnagar. She specifically sought opportunities to steal valuable items. There she noticed 60-year-old Nalla Kamala from Miyapur.
Kamala had come to collect rents from her three-storeyed building. As the elderly woman entered the elevator, Anitha followed closely behind. Before the lift doors could close, Anitha attempted to snatch Kamala's mangalasutram gold chain.
"I raised an alarm immediately," Kamala recounted. "The thief managed to grab about half a tola of gold from my chain before running away."
Swift Police Response
Alerted by local residents, Sanathnagar police rushed to the crime scene. Inspector K Srinivasulu led the search operation through surrounding streets and buildings.
"We conducted a thorough search of the area," Srinivasulu stated. "Our team found the accused hiding in the parking lot of a nearby apartment complex."
Remarkably, police apprehended Anitha within just thirty minutes of her committing the offense. This marked her first criminal attempt.
Confession and Legal Proceedings
During interrogation, Anitha confessed to her actions. She explained that mounting financial difficulties drove her to commit the crime. Her primary motivation was helping her husband manage their substantial debt burden.
Police recovered the stolen gold piece from Anitha's possession. Authorities registered a case under section 304 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which addresses snatching offenses.
Following proper legal procedures, police served Anitha with a notice and granted her station bail. The investigation continues as authorities examine all aspects of this unusual case involving an educated young woman turning to crime.
