Rescue teams search for 8 trapped in Pune building collapse
Rescue operations are ongoing near Pune following a building collapse that occurred around 1:30 pm on Wednesday. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indian Army, civic authorities, fire brigade, and police are working together to locate eight people believed to be trapped under the debris.
The incident took place in a construction site on the outskirts of Pune. According to officials, the building was under construction when it suddenly collapsed, leaving workers feared trapped. Immediate rescue efforts were launched, and heavy machinery has been deployed to clear the rubble.
Multi-agency response underway
An official from the Pune district administration confirmed that the search and rescue operation is being conducted on a war footing. “We have deployed all available resources. The NDRF and SDRF teams are using specialized equipment to locate survivors,” the official said. The Army has also been called in to assist with logistics and manpower.
As of Thursday morning, no casualties have been confirmed, but the rescue teams are racing against time. The condition of the trapped individuals is unknown. Local hospitals have been put on alert to receive any injured.
Cause of collapse under investigation
Preliminary reports suggest that the collapse may have been caused by structural weaknesses or poor construction practices. An investigation has been ordered to determine the exact cause and to fix responsibility. The civic body is also conducting a safety audit of nearby construction sites.
Residents in the vicinity reported hearing a loud noise before the building gave way. “We felt a tremor and then saw a cloud of dust. It was terrifying,” said a local eyewitness. The area has been cordoned off to facilitate rescue operations and ensure public safety.
According to the Pune Municipal Corporation, the building had been issued a stop-work notice earlier due to violations, but construction reportedly continued. Authorities are probing whether the builder ignored safety norms.
