Tragic Sleeper Bus Fire in Jaisalmer Claims One Life, Leaves Six Injured
A devastating fire engulfed a private sleeper bus traveling from Nachna in Jaisalmer to Ahmedabad in the early hours of Friday, resulting in one fatality and injuries to six other passengers. The incident occurred around 3:30 am when 16 passengers were asleep inside the vehicle, leading to a chaotic scramble for survival.
Sudden Blaze and Panic-Stricken Escape
According to preliminary reports, the fire is suspected to have originated from a short circuit in the bus's air conditioning system. The blaze erupted so abruptly that passengers had minimal time to react, with the bus quickly becoming engulfed in flames and causing widespread panic.
Most passengers managed to escape by jumping out through the windows, but tragically, one individual was severely trapped in the flames and sustained critical burn injuries. Several others suffered minor burns during the frantic evacuation.
Medical Response and Fatal Outcome
The critically injured passenger was initially transported to a hospital in Dhanera, Gujarat, but due to the grave nature of the injuries, was subsequently referred to Palanpur for advanced treatment. Despite medical efforts, the passenger succumbed to severe burn injuries during treatment at the Palanpur facility.
Doctors confirmed that the patient arrived at the hospital in an extremely critical condition. The other injured passengers received primary medical attention for their minor injuries and are currently under observation.
Complete Loss of Belongings and Communication Challenges
The intensity of the fire resulted in the complete destruction of all passenger belongings, including luggage, important documents, and mobile phones. This has created significant difficulties for survivors attempting to contact their family members, as their primary means of communication were lost in the blaze.
Nirmal Raiyani, operator of Swagat Travels, which operated the bus service, revealed that the Nachna to Ahmedabad route had only been operational for three to four days prior to the incident. He expressed deep concern over the accident and confirmed that his team was dispatched to the site immediately upon receiving notification.
Raiyani stated, "We are actively trying to contact the affected passengers and their families to provide necessary assistance. Based on initial assessments, the fire appears to have been caused by an electrical short circuit in the vehicle."Ongoing Investigation and Historical Context
The Dhanera police administration in Gujarat has initiated a detailed investigation into the exact cause of the fire. Forensic experts and accident investigators are examining the remains of the bus to determine the precise sequence of events and identify any potential safety lapses.
This tragic incident follows another devastating bus fire that occurred on October 14, 2025, when a private bus traveling from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur caught fire, resulting in 29 fatalities and multiple injuries. The investigation into that earlier catastrophe remains ongoing, highlighting persistent safety concerns in regional bus transportation.
