Tragic Bus Fire Near Rajasthan-Gujarat Border Claims Life, Leaves Eight with Severe Burns
A devastating fire engulfed a private sleeper bus traveling from Nachna in Jaisalmer district to Ahmedabad early Friday morning, resulting in one passenger's death and eight others sustaining serious burn injuries. The tragic incident occurred around 3:30 AM near Nenawa village in Dhanera tehsil of Gujarat, close to the Rajasthan–Gujarat border, while most passengers were asleep.
Rapid Spread of Flames Triggers Panic Among Passengers
According to preliminary police reports, the fire may have been triggered by a short circuit in the bus's air conditioning system. The flames spread with alarming speed, completely engulfing the vehicle and causing widespread panic among the passengers. Many managed to escape by jumping out through windows and the emergency exit, but their personal belongings, mobile phones, and important documents were entirely destroyed in the intense blaze.
Victim Details and Passenger Accounts
The deceased passenger has been identified as Ambalal, a 40-year-old resident of Khinvsar in Jaisalmer district. Family members revealed that Ambalal, a tailor working in Ramgarh who was suffering from diabetes, was traveling to Ahmedabad specifically to obtain necessary medications. He succumbed to his critical burn injuries during treatment at a hospital in Palanpur.
Among the eight injured passengers are Bhavna Shah from Ahmedabad, Manisha Mali from Jaisalmer, Malam Singh from Jaisalmer, Ratan Bhai from Barmer, Sharif Khan from Jaisalmer, Aruna from Jaisalmer, and one unidentified individual. Sharif Khan, who was traveling with his wife, provided crucial details about the timeline of events.
"The bus departed from Jaisalmer around 10:30 PM, and we first noticed flames around 3 AM," Khan recounted. "When the fire broke out, the driver immediately jumped out and fled the scene, leaving passengers to fend for themselves."
New Bus Service and Ongoing Investigation
Nirmal Raiyani, operator of Swagat Travels, confirmed that the Nachna–Ahmedabad bus service had commenced operations only three to four days prior to the tragic incident. This relatively new route adds another layer of concern regarding vehicle maintenance and safety protocols.
Dhanera police in Gujarat have officially launched a comprehensive investigation into the exact cause of the fire. Authorities are examining multiple factors, including:
- The suspected short circuit in the air conditioning system
- Potential electrical faults throughout the vehicle
