Businessman Held Captive, Robbed of Rs 2 Crore in Thane

In a shocking case of abduction and extortion, a businessman from Karnataka was held captive for several days in hotels across Thane and robbed of a staggering Rs 2 crore at gunpoint. The Thane Police have successfully cracked the case, leading to the arrest of the prime accused.

The Orchestrated Kidnapping and Captivity

The victim, identified as Manish Kothari (48), a resident of Hubballi in Karnataka, was lured to Thane under false pretenses. The incident began unfolding on May 8. The accused, Nitin Shetty (35), who is known to the victim, allegedly conspired with others to carry out this elaborate crime.

Upon Kothari's arrival, he was taken captive and moved between different hotels in Thane. For three to four days, he was held against his will. The captors used threats and intimidation, culminating in a terrifying moment where they held him at gunpoint and forced him to transfer the massive sum of money.

Police Investigation and Arrest

After being released, a traumatized Manish Kothari approached the Thane Nagar Police Station and filed a formal complaint. The police immediately launched a detailed investigation into the serious allegations of kidnapping and robbery.

Acting on technical surveillance and specific intelligence, the police team zeroed in on the main suspect. Nitin Shetty was arrested from his hideout. During interrogation, he reportedly confessed to his involvement in the crime. The police are now actively pursuing his accomplices who are currently absconding.

Weapon Recovered, Hunt for Accomplices On

A significant breakthrough in the case was the recovery of the pistol used to threaten the victim. This weapon was seized from the accused upon his arrest, providing crucial physical evidence.

Authorities have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for kidnapping, wrongful confinement, extortion, and criminal intimidation. The investigation is ongoing to trace the flow of the stolen Rs 2 crore and to apprehend the remaining individuals involved in this brazen crime.

Broader Implications and Public Safety

This alarming incident has sent ripples through the business community, highlighting risks associated with high-value transactions and dealings. The Thane Police's swift action in arresting the primary accused has been noted, but the case underscores the need for heightened vigilance.

The police have advised the public, especially businesspersons, to exercise extreme caution and verify the credentials of individuals they plan to meet for financial dealings. They have also assured that the probe will be thorough to ensure all perpetrators face justice.
