Court Convicts Rameshwar Ram in 2002 Murder
District and Additional Sessions Judge-I-cum-Special Judge (SC/ST PoA Act) Uday Pratap Singh found Rameshwar Ram (60), a resident of Bhadwar village under the Bagen Gola police station area, guilty under Sections 302/34 of the Indian Penal Code. The court awarded him rigorous life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 10,000.
Details of the 2002 Incident
According to additional public prosecutor Jai Ram Singh, the tragic incident occurred on April 30, 2002, stemming from a dispute over the flow of water from a hand pump in the village. During the altercation, the accused allegedly assaulted Meghnath Ram, causing grievous injuries. The victim later succumbed to his injuries, leading to the murder case.
Legal Proceedings and Investigation
An FIR was lodged at the Bagen Gola police station on May 1, 2002. After a thorough investigation, the police filed a chargesheet, and the trial was conducted in the sessions court. Initially, three persons were named as accused in the case. However, Khakhanu Ram and Sahabir Ram died during the trial, leaving Rameshwar as the sole defendant.
Court's Verdict and Rights of the Convicted
After meticulously examining the evidence and hearing arguments from both sides, the court held Rameshwar guilty. The court also informed him of his right to appeal and stated that he could seek assistance from the Legal Services Authority if he was unable to afford a lawyer, ensuring access to justice.
This verdict underscores the persistence of the judicial system in delivering justice, even in cases that span decades, and highlights the importance of legal recourse in resolving long-standing disputes.
