An emotional appeal from an elderly cancer patient set the tone for the Superintendent of Police's (SP) Janata Darbar held in Dumraon, Buxar, on Sunday. The public hearing, a platform for citizens to voice grievances directly to the district's top police officer, was dominated by complaints related to land disputes and pressing social issues.
Land Disputes and Family Feuds Take Center Stage
Sunaina Devi, the cancer patient, made a heartfelt plea alleging that her daughter-in-law was obstructing the sale of ancestral land needed to fund her critical medical treatment. In a counter-accusation, the daughter-in-law claimed that the in-laws were showing undue favoritism towards their younger son. Taking immediate cognizance, the SP directed the Dumraon Station House Officer (SHO) to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure justice is served.
This case was not an isolated one. A significant majority of the complaints received during the Darbar involved conflicts over land, including allegations of encroachment on both government and private property, as well as illegal constructions. The SP assured the residents that proper inquiries would be initiated and timely action taken on all such matters.
In an unusual turn of events, even a police officer sought justice. ASI Amit Kumar and his mother approached the SP, alleging a life-threatening attack over a land dispute. The SP promised strict legal action in this case as well.
Security and Social Concerns Addressed
Beyond property conflicts, residents raised serious concerns about public safety. Several complaints highlighted the nuisance created by loiterers near girls' schools and colleges, causing discomfort and potential risk to students. Responding promptly, the SP directed woman Sub-Inspector Priyanka Kumari to conduct regular patrols in these sensitive areas with a team of female constables. He also gave assurances for the installation of CCTV cameras near Sumitra College to enhance security surveillance.
The menace of drug addiction was also brought to the fore, with specific complaints about addicts causing trouble near the Janglinath Shiv Temple and in Rajdiha village. The SP ordered intensified police patrolling in these zones and emphasized the need for community-level intervention to tackle the root of the problem.
Calls for Modern Policing and Cyber Vigilance
The Darbar also saw forward-looking suggestions for improving police infrastructure and tackling modern crimes. Youth leader Deepak Yadav put forth several demands, including the establishment of a dedicated cyber police station in the district, installation of CCTV cameras at the Dumraon police station itself, finding solutions to persistent traffic issues, and taking stringent action against crimes proliferating on social media platforms.
The SP acknowledged the importance of these issues. While clarifying existing rules and procedures, he welcomed the suggestion for organizing cybercrime awareness drives among the public and assured that positive steps would be taken to address the demands related to modernizing police response mechanisms.
The Janata Darbar in Buxar successfully provided a direct channel for citizens, highlighting that while traditional issues like land disputes remain prevalent, new-age challenges such as cybercrime and drug abuse require equal and immediate attention from the law enforcement machinery.
