Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Monday denied bail to Moulana Sahajahan Ali, a leader of the Indian Secular Front (ISF), in connection with the Mothabari violence case. The court cited the seriousness of the allegations and noted that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has yet to conclude its investigation.
Court Proceedings
A division bench comprising Justices Debangsu Basak and Md Shabbar Rashidi heard the bail plea. Ali's counsel argued that the offenses in question are not scheduled under the NIA Act and that further detention of the accused is unnecessary. However, the NIA opposed the bail application, stating that the Supreme Court had ordered an expedited probe, which is still underway. The agency alleged that Ali instigated the crowd during the violence and that two witnesses along with a police officer have identified him as the instigator.
Background of the Case
The Mothabari violence case pertains to clashes that erupted in the Mothabari area, leading to significant unrest. The NIA took over the investigation following the Supreme Court's directive for a speedy probe. Ali's role as a local leader has been under scrutiny, with authorities claiming he played a key role in escalating tensions.
The court's decision to deny bail underscores the gravity of the charges and the ongoing nature of the investigation. The case continues to be monitored closely, with further hearings expected as the NIA progresses with its probe.
