A major water supply pipeline burst at Kansabhatt in Tivim shortly after midnight on Sunday when a car veered off the road and crashed into it, severely damaging a control valve. The impact created a massive water fountain that shot up to the height of a coconut tree, wasting thousands of litres of treated water. The gushing water inundated the road stretch, disrupting vehicular movement for several hours.
Emergency Response and Traffic Diversion
Police and emergency services rushed to the spot and diverted traffic while efforts were underway to contain the leak. According to preliminary reports, one of the vehicle occupants sustained minor injuries and was administered first aid. The car suffered extensive damage.
Impact on Water Supply
The affected pipeline is a key water supply line serving the coastal tourist hub of Calangute. Public works department (PWD) officials were alerted immediately and managed to isolate the damaged section to prevent prolonged disruption of water supply.
PWD Official Statement: “The water supply line serves the Calangute area, and the accident caused severe damage to the control valve. While a significant quantity of water was lost in the initial gush, our teams acted swiftly. The supply line was bypassed and water supply was restored immediately to prevent any major crisis in the coastal belt,” a senior PWD official said.
