CBI Arrests MCD Deputy Commissioner and Administrative Officer in Rs 4 Lakh Bribery Scandal
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has made significant arrests in a corruption case involving the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). On Tuesday, officials confirmed the arrest of a deputy commissioner and an administrative officer from the Shahdara North Zone in connection with an alleged bribery case amounting to Rs 4 lakh.
Details of the Alleged Bribery Scheme
The case was officially registered on Monday against Devanshu Gautam, who serves as an administrative officer in the Shahdara North Zone. According to the complaint, Gautam had demanded a bribe from a complainant on behalf of Lt. Col. Abhishek Mishra, the deputy commissioner of the same zone. The complainant, identified as a senior sector assistant within MCD, provided detailed allegations in his statement.
The complainant stated: "I am a senior sector assistant, and my colleague is a junior secretariat assistant. I was suspended from service on May 2, 2023, and my colleague was suspended on March 28, 2024." He further explained, "Our departmental inquiry is being conducted by Mishra. To rule in our favour and forward the matter to competent authorities, Gautam is demanding Rs 2 lakh from each of us as bribe on Mishra's behalf. We do not wish to pay any bribe and request you to take appropriate action against both of them."
CBI's Swift Action and Arrests
Acting promptly on the complaint, the CBI set up a trap and successfully caught Gautam red-handed while he was accepting the bribe money. During the preliminary investigation, Mishra's alleged involvement in the scheme came to light, leading to both officials being taken into custody. They were subsequently produced before the Rouse Avenue Court, which granted the CBI their custody for one day to facilitate further investigation into the matter.
The agency is now intensively working to uncover the full extent of the alleged corruption and to determine if any other individuals might be involved in this case. This investigation highlights the CBI's ongoing efforts to combat corruption within government bodies.
Background and Statements from Former Mayor
Former mayor Shyam Sunder Agarwal later provided additional context to reporters. He revealed that the victim, the senior sector assistant, had approached him with concerns about one of his files being held by Mishra. According to Agarwal, the victim had repeatedly requested Mishra to move the file forward so he could receive his salary, but these requests were consistently ignored.
Agarwal recounted: "I told him the only option was to go to CBI. We went to the CBI office, and it took his complaint and registered an FIR. The administrative officer, who had called the senior sector assistant to Rajghat with the bribe, was caught red-handed while accepting the money." This statement underscores the victim's desperation and the systematic nature of the alleged extortion.
Implications and Ongoing Investigation
This case has brought to light serious allegations of corruption within MCD's administrative ranks. The arrests of such high-ranking officials signal a strong message against bribery and misuse of power. The CBI's investigation is expected to delve deeper into the operational dynamics of the Shahdara North Zone and possibly reveal broader patterns of misconduct.
As the probe continues, authorities are focusing on gathering evidence and testimonies to build a robust case. The outcome of this investigation could have significant repercussions for governance and accountability in Delhi's municipal operations, emphasizing the need for transparency and ethical conduct in public service.
