CBI Assumes Custody of Six Accused in Major Rs 593 Crore IDFC First Bank Fraud Case
In a significant development in the high-profile Rs 593 crore IDFC First Bank scam, the Special CBI Court for Haryana in Panchkula formally handed over the custody of six accused individuals to the Central Bureau of Investigation on Friday. This move marks a crucial step in the ongoing investigation into one of the largest financial frauds to hit the region.
Accused Handed Over to Central Investigative Agency
The six individuals whose custody was transferred to the CBI include Abhay Kumar, his wife Swati Singla, Swati's brother Abhishek Singla, the main accused Rishabh Rishi, along with Naresh Kumar and Manish Bansal. The court has granted the CBI custody of these accused until Monday, as confirmed by official information shared by defense counsels involved in the case.
Background of the Multi-Crore Financial Scandal
The origins of this massive financial scandal date back to February, when the Haryana State Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau registered a case based on communication from the chief secretary's office. The case centered on alleged manipulation and financial impropriety involving funds worth Rs 593 crore at IDFC First Bank. Notably, these funds belonged to 18 different government departments and corporations, highlighting the extensive reach of the alleged fraud.
Although the money was eventually restored to the government, the ACB initiated arrests, with these six individuals being the first to be apprehended. Their arrest proved instrumental in uncovering further embezzlement of funds in various projects within Chandigarh, expanding the scope of the investigation beyond initial expectations.
Escalation of Investigations and Multiple Agency Involvement
By the first week of the investigation, the ACB had arrested a total of 15 accused in the case. The scale and complexity of the fraud eventually prompted the government to recommend a CBI probe into the entire matter. Accordingly, the CBI registered a fresh complaint and initiated its own comprehensive investigation.
Simultaneously, the Directorate of Enforcement also launched a parallel probe into the multi-layered scam. The ED conducted questioning sessions with key accused Abhay Kumar and Rishabh Rishi at Ambala jail, seeking to unravel the intricate financial web created by the alleged perpetrators.
Recent Legal Proceedings and Case Transfer
Last week, following the CBI's formal takeover of the case, the case files were transferred from the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge to the court of Special CBI Judge Rajiv Goyal. Judge Goyal resumed proceedings, during which the CBI moved an application seeking custody of the accused, leading to Friday's formal custody transfer.
This development represents a critical juncture in the investigation, as the CBI now has direct access to the accused for interrogation and evidence gathering. The case continues to unfold as authorities work to determine the full extent of the financial irregularities and identify any additional individuals who may have been involved in the elaborate scam.
