Joint Operation Dismantles Wildlife Trafficking Network
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), and Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) have successfully busted an interstate wildlife trade gang in a coordinated operation. The crackdown, which took place on July 9, 2026, targeted a syndicate involved in the illegal trafficking of protected wildlife species across state borders.
Details of the Crackdown
According to officials, the operation was launched based on intelligence inputs regarding the movement of contraband wildlife items. Multiple locations in Maharashtra and West Bengal were raided simultaneously. The agencies seized a significant quantity of wildlife products, including skins, bones, and live animals of endangered species. Several suspects were apprehended during the raids, and investigations are ongoing to identify other members of the network.
A senior CBI officer stated, "This is a major breakthrough in our fight against wildlife crime. The gang had established a sophisticated supply chain spanning several states." The DRI and WCCB contributed expertise in tracking illegal trade routes and identifying protected species.
Impact on Wildlife Conservation
The bust is expected to disrupt illegal wildlife trade in the region significantly. Wildlife experts have hailed the operation as a critical step in protecting endangered species. The seized items are being examined to determine their origin and the extent of the network's operations. Authorities are also probing possible links to international wildlife trafficking rings.
