Twisha Sharma Death Case: CBI Team Arrives in Bhopal for Probe
CBI Team in Bhopal for Twisha Sharma Death Probe

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team arrived in Bhopal on Tuesday to probe the death of Twisha Sharma, who was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her marital home in the state capital. The case, which has sparked widespread outrage, involves allegations of dowry harassment and murder.

Background of the Case

Twisha Sharma, a 24-year-old woman, was married to Abhishek Sharma in February 2023. She was found dead at her in-laws' residence in Bhopal's Baghmugalia area on March 3, 2024. Her family alleges that she was subjected to dowry demands and torture by her husband and in-laws. The Bhopal police initially registered a case of unnatural death, but later added sections related to dowry death based on the family's complaint.

CBI Takes Over Investigation

Following a directive from the Madhya Pradesh High Court, the case was transferred to the CBI for a fair and impartial investigation. A five-member CBI team, led by a deputy superintendent of police, reached Bhopal and began gathering evidence. The team visited the crime scene and recorded statements of neighbors and family members.

Allegations and Evidence

The victim's father, Ramesh Sharma, has accused the in-laws of killing his daughter for dowry. He claimed that Twisha was often harassed for additional dowry items, including a car and cash. The post-mortem report indicated death due to asphyxia, but the family suspects it was a murder staged as suicide. The CBI will re-examine the forensic evidence and question all suspects.

Legal Proceedings

The Bhopal police had arrested the husband, Abhishek Sharma, and three others—father-in-law, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law—on charges of dowry death and criminal conspiracy. They are currently in judicial custody. The CBI will now take over the investigation and may file a fresh charge sheet if required.

Public Outcry and Protests

The case has triggered protests by women's rights groups and local residents, demanding justice for Twisha. Activists have called for stricter implementation of dowry laws and better protection for women. The CBI's involvement is seen as a step toward ensuring accountability.

The CBI team is expected to submit its preliminary report within a week. The investigation will focus on establishing the sequence of events leading to Twisha's death and determining if it was a suicide or murder. The agency will also probe allegations of evidence tampering by the local police.
