The next round of discussions between the Union home ministry and Ladakh representatives on safeguards for the region will resume on May 22, as announced by Ladakh Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena in a post on X on Sunday. The talks are expected to explore ways to strengthen elected local bodies with legislative powers and offer further safeguards to the Ladakhi people in matters related to land, culture, and employment, among others.
Background of the Talks
The discussions resume after a gap of almost three months, following the revocation of activist Sonam Wangchuk's detention under the National Security Act (NSA). Experts view this as a conciliatory move by the Centre to earn the trust of Ladakhi groups. The home ministry, while releasing Wangchuk, cited a commitment to fostering an environment of peace, stability, and mutual trust in Ladakh to facilitate constructive and meaningful dialogue with stakeholders.
Previous Meeting and Demands
In early February, the ministry heard the demands of Ladakh bodies, including the Apex Body Leh and the Kargil Democratic Alliance. The Ladakhi leaders were asked to return with a revised proposal. Ministry sources indicated that they expect to receive feedback on the proposal at the May 22 meeting.
The talks aim to address key concerns of the Ladakhi people, including protection of land rights, cultural preservation, and employment opportunities. Strengthening local governance through elected bodies with legislative powers is also on the agenda.
