Mumbai: A national of the Republic of Chad was caught by Customs officials at Mumbai airport for attempting to smuggle out 14,580 US dollars, equivalent to Rs 1.41 crore, to Addis Ababa.
Interception Based on Intelligence
Acting on specific intelligence, the Air Intelligence Unit of Customs intercepted Al Amir Osman Adam, a Republic of Chad national from Central Africa. He had cleared immigration and was about to board a flight to Addis Ababa when the officials stopped him.
Search and Recovery
As the information was precise, the officials conducted a thorough search of his baggage. This led to the recovery of 14,580 US dollars in denominations of 100, 50, 20, and 10. The total amount was equivalent to over Rs 1.41 crore.
Arrest and Legal Action
During interrogation, Adam was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for carrying such a large amount of cash. He was placed under arrest under the Customs Act. The concerned consulate was informed about the incident.
