Chain Snatcher Apprehended Following Police Firefight in Ghazipur District
In a dramatic early morning operation, police in the Nandganj area of Ghazipur district, Varanasi, successfully captured a notorious chain snatcher after a brief exchange of gunfire on Saturday. The incident unfolded during a routine night patrol when officers received a critical tip-off about suspicious activities in the vicinity.
Police Patrol Leads to Confrontation
According to Ghazipur Circle Officer (Bhudkuda) Shubham Verma, officers from the Nandganj police station were conducting their regular night patrol duties when they obtained information about potential criminal activity. Acting swiftly, the police team sealed off the Barahpur railway crossing and began inspecting vehicles passing through the area.
During this security check, a motorcycle rider approached the checkpoint but immediately attempted to flee upon noticing the police presence. In his haste to escape, the rider lost control of his motorcycle and fell to the ground, giving police the opportunity to surround him.
Exchange of Fire and Arrest
Cornered by the police personnel, the suspect opened fire, prompting officers to return fire in self-defense. During this exchange, the accused sustained a leg injury and was subsequently apprehended by the police team. He was immediately transported to the district hospital for medical treatment of his injuries.
Following the arrest, police conducted a search and recovered significant evidence from the suspect. The recovered items included two mangalsutra gold lockets, several gold beads, the motorcycle used in the attempted escape, a pistol, and multiple cartridges.
Accused Identified and Previous Crimes
The arrested individual has been identified as Sarvajeet Yadav, a resident of Chandauli district. Police investigations have revealed that Yadav was actively involved in a series of chain snatching incidents targeting women in the Nandganj area.
According to police records, Yadav was specifically involved in snatching mangalsutras from women on February 1 and February 10 of this year. Authorities have confirmed that four separate cases were previously lodged against him at both Jamaniya and Nandganj police stations for these thefts.
Police officials emphasized that the successful operation demonstrates their commitment to combating street crimes and ensuring public safety in the region. The recovery of stolen jewelry and weapons has provided crucial evidence for the ongoing investigation into Yadav's criminal activities.
The incident highlights the risks police officers face while performing their duties and their determination to apprehend criminals who threaten community security. Further legal proceedings are expected as authorities continue to investigate the full extent of Yadav's alleged crimes and recover additional stolen property.
