In a shocking incident highlighting urban safety concerns, the Chandigarh Police have successfully apprehended two individuals for allegedly robbing a senior citizen at knifepoint in a wooded area of Sector 43. The arrested accused have been identified as Nayak Praveen and Amit alias Sunny, residents of Sector 52.
Brutal Assault in a Secluded Area
The victim, 70-year-old Balwan Singh Nain from Sector 44D, was returning home a few days ago when the terrifying ordeal unfolded. As he neared the jungle patch in Sector 43, two individuals suddenly accosted him. They forcefully dragged him into the wooded area. One of the assailants brandished a knife, threatened to kill him, and demanded he hand over all his possessions.
When the elderly man attempted to cry out for help, the accused silenced him by stuffing cloth into his mouth. They then proceeded to assault him brutally before looting his belongings. The stolen items included approximately Rs 850 in cash, a mobile phone, and other personal effects.
Rescue and Medical Treatment
Left with serious injuries to his head and body, Balwan Singh Nain was in no condition to move. He remained trapped in the jungle, shouting for assistance for nearly half an hour. His ordeal ended when his son, Manoj, who had gone out searching for him, finally located the spot.
The police were immediately informed. Officers from the Sector 36 police station rushed to the scene and arranged for the injured senior citizen to be admitted to GMCH-32 for urgent medical treatment.
Swift Police Action and Ongoing Probe
Acting on the victim's complaint and subsequent investigation, the police team moved quickly to track down the suspects. Their efforts led to the arrest of both Nayak Praveen and Amit alias Sunny. The police confirmed that one of the arrested individuals is a woman.
Authorities are now interrogating the duo to ascertain their potential involvement in other criminal activities that have occurred in the city. This arrest brings a measure of relief but also raises pertinent questions about safety in public spaces, especially for vulnerable groups like the elderly.
