Chandigarh Court Extends Police Remand for BJP Office Grenade Blast Accused
In a significant development in the Chandigarh grenade blast case, the UT police have been granted three additional days to interrogate the two primary accused, Gurtej Singh and Amanpreet. The explosive incident occurred outside the Punjab BJP headquarters in Sector 37, Chandigarh, and has been linked to a Pakistan-backed terror module.
Court Proceedings and Custody Decisions
Following the completion of an initial three-day police remand, the Sector 39 police presented all three accused—Amanpreet, Gurtej Singh, and Hardeep Singh—before a local court. The judicial authority ordered Hardeep Singh to 14 days of judicial custody, while Amanpreet and Gurtej Singh were remanded to police custody for three more days to facilitate further questioning.
This extension comes after the police brought nine accused individuals on a production warrant from Punjab on April 13. According to investigative findings, Amanpreet is alleged to have lobbed the grenade, while Gurtej Singh recorded a video of the attack. Hardeep Singh's purported role involved receiving the grenade, which arrived from Pakistan via drone, and distributing money among the conspirators.
Details of the Attack and Investigation
The grenade blast took place on April 1, 2026, at approximately 5:00 PM outside the Punjab BJP office in Sector 37. Two assailants arrived on a motorcycle, with one throwing a low-intensity hand grenade and the other capturing the incident on video. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, although several parked vehicles sustained damage.
Police investigations have revealed that the attack was orchestrated as part of a terror module backed by Pakistan's ISI. The operation was directed by handlers based abroad, identified as Baljot Singh (alias Jot) in Portugal and Harjit Singh Laddi in Germany. The accused were reportedly lured with a sum of Rs 2 lakh to carry out the attack, and a prior reconnaissance of the location was conducted.
Ongoing Investigative Measures
During the extended remand period, the Sector 39 police station plans to take the accused to the crime scene for crime scene recreation. This process will involve videographing the sequence of events and questioning the suspects about the routes and vehicles they used to flee the city after executing the crime.
Other individuals implicated in the case—Balwinder Lal, Jaswir Singh, Charanjit Singh, Rubal Chauhan, Mandeep, and Navdeep—have already been sent to judicial custody by the court. The police continue to pursue all leads to dismantle the terror network involved in this alarming incident.
