Chandigarh Implements Strict No-Fly Zone for Drones Ahead of Air Show
In a significant security measure, Chandigarh has been officially declared a "no-flying zone" for drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) from March 23 to 28, 2026. This decision comes in anticipation of the Indian Air Force's Surya Kiran team performing at Sukhna Lake from March 27 to 28, with District Magistrate Nishant Kumar Yadav issuing the order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.
Security Concerns Drive Drone Ban
The order, aimed at ensuring the safety of VVIPs and the general public, cites emerging threats from anti-national elements as a primary reason for the restriction. The entire Union Territory will be affected, prohibiting all unauthorized drone flights during this six-day period. This move underscores the heightened security protocols in place for high-profile events involving military displays and dignitary movements.
Exemptions for Law Enforcement Agencies
However, the ban is not absolute. It will not apply to law enforcement agencies, including the police, paramilitary forces, Air Force personnel, Special Protection Group (SPG) members, and others authorized by competent government authorities. This exemption ensures that essential security and operational activities can continue uninterrupted while maintaining public safety.
IAF's Surya Kiran Team to Dazzle at Sukhna Lake
The highlight of this period is the performance by the IAF's renowned Surya Kiran aerobatic team at Sukhna Lake. The air show, scheduled for March 27 and 28, is expected to draw large crowds, necessitating stringent measures to prevent any potential security breaches via aerial devices. The team's displays are a popular attraction, showcasing precision flying and national pride.
Residents and visitors in Chandigarh are advised to comply with the no-fly zone regulations to avoid legal repercussions. The District Magistrate's office has emphasized the importance of these restrictions in safeguarding the event and ensuring a smooth, secure experience for all attendees. This proactive step reflects the administration's commitment to leveraging legal frameworks for enhanced public security during major gatherings.
